Myths, Facts, and Incorrect Assumptions about Viagra (Sildenafil)
Myths and misinformation keep millions of men from experiencing a more fulfilling sex life – don’t be one of them!
Viagra — also known as sildenafil — has improved the sex lives of millions of men (and their partners) since the drug was introduced in 1998.
However, there are a lot of misconceptions around Viagra, preventing people from getting the necessary treatment for getting the most out of their intimate relationships. The solutions are there, but men are hesitant to take the step toward resolution. Fortunately, in the past few years, millions have decided to take action and seek resolution.
Let’s take a look at the most common Viagra facts and myths.
Viagra is only for the older generation.
False. ED treatments have become more and more prevalent in younger men in recent years. Sildenafil and other ED meds can enhance the sexual experience by increasing confidence, providing increased and reliable firmness with shortened refractory periods between sexual sessions.
Viagra is the only ED medication.
False. There are several medications used to treat ED, including Cialis (generic = tadalafil), Stendra (generic = avanafil), and Levitra (generic = vardenafil).
Viagra is the best ED medication.
False. Thanks to great marketing, Viagra is perhaps the most popular ED medication on the market — but it’s certainly not the only one, and may not be the best – for you. A 2017 study found that tadalafil was just as safe and effective as sildenafil, and that “patients and their partners preferred tadalafil over sildenafil,” suggesting that tadalafil could be a better choice for ED treatment.
Viagra works immediately.
False. Sildenafil takes between 30-60 minutes to work. And for some, as little as 15 minutes. But remember — you’re still going to need sexual stimulation to get a hard erection! You won’t just walk around with an unwanted erection.
You can’t take Viagra with alcohol.
False. You can take sildenafil while drinking alcohol. However, drinking excessively can decrease the drug’s effectiveness while increasing the risk of side effects. If you want to get the most out of your Viagra, take it on an empty stomach and don’t drink too much! Trust us, the results are worth it.
Viagra works best when taken on an empty stomach.
True. Sildenafil works remarkably better when it is taken without food. In fact, taking it with food can significantly diminish the effects. However, other medications, such as tadalafil, don’t seem to be affected by food intake.
If you use Viagra, it means you’re “broken.”
False. Sildenafil, tadalafil, and other ED meds aren’t just for those who need help achieving erections every time. Some people only use them as-needed, meaning they only need medication every once in a while, perhaps when they are stressed or other external factors are present. Additionally, for many, sildenafil has the side benefit of enhancing the sexual experience by boosting confidence due to a firmer and more reliable erection (and shorter refractory period), rather than just “fixing” a problem.
Viagra gives you spontaneous erections.
False. Contrary to popular belief, taking the “blue pill” or sildenafil won’t give you an instant erection moments after you take it. It also won’t give you erections when you don’t expect them. Although it makes it easier to get an erection, sildenafil merely improves the blood flow to your penis — you still need to be aroused.
You need a prescription to buy Viagra.
True. Yes, you do need a prescription to buy sildenafil and other PDE-5 inhibitors. However, with the rise of telemedicine, you can get a prescription without going to the doctor’s office or going to the pharmacy. That’s right — the medications can be delivered right to your door! We can make it happen.
Viagra can have side effects.
True (but they are mostly mild). Like all medication, sildenafil can have side effects. For the most part, side effects are mild and rare, but the most common ones are headache and nausea that usually subside quickly and aren’t serious enough to stop most people from using the medication again (and again, and again!).
Viagra causes erections that last for hours.
False (with a caveat). It is rare that Viagra alone will cause priapism. In fact, an August 2020 study suggested that “drug-induced priapism should be attributed to a wider spectrum of medications” rather than PDE-5 inhibitors such as sildenafil and tadalafil.
It’s worth noting, however, that combining sildenafil with other treatments, such as penile injection therapy, can increase the risk of priapism. Just be honest with your clinician, and they will do their best to mitigate any risk, which is very low in this area.
It can happen, though. So in the unlikely event that you have an erection that lasts for 4+ hours, go to the emergency room right away.
ED meds are very expensive.
False. If you buy brand-name Viagra or Cialis, yes, you could be paying upwards of $70 per pill. However, we offer generic alternatives starting at just $2 a pill that are just as safe and effective.
Viagra is linked to a lower risk of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD).
True. This one’s actually one of the newest Viagra facts. A December 2021 study based on the analysis of over 7 million insurance claims found that “sildenafil usage was significantly associated with a 69% reduced risk of AD.” Researchers say the correlation shown in the study is enough to identify sildenafil as a promising candidate for AD.
And this isn’t the first time the drug has been linked to improved health — sildenafil has shown promise in a range of scientific contexts including malaria and cancer research.
Don’t Miss Out Because of Misinformation!
These myths have contributed to Viagra being underutilized. With the proper education, people will better understand the role sildenafil and other meds should play in their sex lives.
